Long live Sanginjoki!

Long live Sanginjoki! history bench can be found in a scenic place in the shade of trees near the Sanginjoki Youth Club.
The reliefs on the bench and the history sign placed on the back were born out of a desire to record and share the rich history, everyday life and story tradition of the village of Sanginjoki.
The content of the history sign is based on memories collected from the villagers, old photographs and, in particular, information compiled by the village’s historian Veera Heikkinen. The history sign includes stories about agriculture, schooling, hunting and the power of community spirit.
The illustration, visual look and content of the sign were created together with the Sanginkontu art team with the composition of Satu Pietilä, Karita Heikkinen and Riitta Johanna Laitinen. We cooperated by listening to and appreciating the villagers. Our goal has been to create a permanent tribute to the living cultural heritage of the Sanginjoki village.
The work was developed in collaboration with Kari Viinikangas, a chainsaw sculptor from Pyhäjoki. Kari carved a wide bench with a backrest, the themes of which are intertwined with the forest and water nature of the Sanginjoki, the village milieu and reminders of the reindeer tracks along which tar was transported from the north towards the port of Oulu in the past.
The history sign on the back of the bench is in Finnish. The texts can be found in English on Sanginkontu’s YouTube channel.
